HSPPR Awarded Prestigious Four-Star Rating

Independent watchdog Charity Navigator has awarded the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region with a four-star rating for its sound fiscal management, the highest honor given by the nation’s premier appraiser of charities.

HSPPR shelters nearly 23,000 animals annually.“It is especially rewarding to receive this recognition in these challenging economic times,” said Randy Harrelson, Director of Development for HSPPR. “We know donors are looking very carefully at the non-profits they choose to support, and want to see their contributions used wisely. We work hard to make the most of donors’ generosity, and it’s a great feeling to receive this independent confirmation of our success in those efforts.”

Only three other animal-related agencies in the state of Colorado have earned the four-star rating, and statewide, HSPPR is the only organization of its type to do so.

“The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America,” said Ken Berger, President & CEO of Charity Navigator.

Berger further lauded the organization, noting that “This ‘exceptional’ designation from Charity Navigator differentiates the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”

HSPPR shelters nearly 23,000 animals annually, and its 66 percent save rate far surpasses the national average of 50 percent.

Although tight governmental budgets have reduced services to some jurisdictions, HSPPR still provides services to Colorado Springs, Fountain, Monument, unincorporated El Paso County, Fort Carson, and has divisions in Pueblo City and County, Douglas County, and Centennial as well. Recent achievements include the opening of an in-house surgery center, which was funded by donations from foundations and individual donors.

The high-achieving organization is dedicated to preventing animal cruelty and neglect, and promoting a responsible community where animals are inherently valued and owners are committed to their pets.
